I'll be interested in some of the titles, The prequels don't mean anything though to me. The brilliance of the original, not only for story, but also in timing. In the mid eighties, Watchmen came out and everyone said WTF is this! It was different in character development and story telling, in-cased in it's own universe. That part is gone now years later and these stories need to stand out on their own. The Azzarello writing Rorschach is going to amazing though.

I don't think it's blasphemy because it's fair game and I don't hold Watchmen up on a pedestal. But I think it does show (again) that DC is completely out of ideas and out of touch with consumers. They've announced 35(!) issues to serve as a prequel to a 12 issue maxi-series... and just like all their other big events, there's going to be another batch of 30 or 40 that they haven't announced yet. We'll be seeing all these issues in the quarter bins by 2014.

I honestly don't care what Moore has to say about it because he did the work for DC and it's DC's property. If he wants ultimate control, he needs to negotiate for ultimate control or self-publish. I do see his point though, and I agree with it. IMO, DC is completely out of ideas (both with this project and in the New 52, sadly).

Oh - and I hate the new logo. Not because it's new & different, but because it's not a logo. It's a gimmick. And it's going to look *terrible* at small sizes. That one with the Joker in it... shrink that down to fit in the logo area of a comic and it's going to be a mess.

Marvel has changed their logo every few years for as long as I can remember - 30 years at least. They did that thing with the character heads in the 80's, they swapped between "Marvel Comics Group", "Marvel Comics" and "Marvel" a few times. The lettering changed several times. But it was always recognizable as being in the Marvel style. DC? They had the same logo since 1976, save for the period beginning in '05 with the swoosh, which was a variant of the bullet anyway.

Marvel did it right. They inoculated themselves against criticism by changing things up on a regular basis (it's the same reason nobody gets angry when Marvel characters' costumes get periodic alterations (Thor, Fantastic Four, Spider-man, Wolverine) but if you change the shade of yellow used in Superman's S-shield, fanboys light the torches). Comics geeks hate change, unless change is the norm.

DC is about two issues away from losing me to Marvel. I've been checking out some of Marvel's recent stuff and it's blowing DC away in almost every way. I've even been enjoying a lot of the Avengers stories lately (and I think the premise behind Avenging Spider-Man has a *ton* of potential).

In a stunning move by Marvel, Wolverine will be killed off in February and sit out the entire event, only to be resurrected a week after it concludes. Marvel fanboys everywhere will panic when they realize that the Canadian hero will be completely missing. "Where will I get my Wolverine fix?" they'll cry. "I rely on his 43 appearances every month! Marvel is removing him from the twelve teams he's currently on? That's MADNESS!"

I just know that, in an online world devoid of tone of voice, I sometimes come across like a jerk when I don't intend to. It's happened over on my site a couple of times, so I try to be wary of it.

As for the comics, I agree that there is certainly something to be said for someone consistently writing solid comics, even if they aren't pushing the medium into new directions (if I wanted all revolutionary, all the time, I probably would read a lot fewer mainstream superhero comics), but I guess I feel like, if you're going to tell a story that we've seen dozens of times by this point in time, you should try to do something different with it. Maybe I'm just using some sort of double standard or something, but it's how I feel.

Pacing can't really be simple or complex. It's well-paced, too fast, or too slow. In terms of plotting, it is simple and is what you say, but that's part of my problem. Like I said, I don't feel like we're going somewhere worth going. The biggest reason for that is that we have seen this before a lot of times, and it doesn't seem like Johns is doing anything new or revolutionary with the "team getting together" story, which makes me wonder why he's subjecting us to it, especially when, if solicitations for upcoming issues are to be believed, it's going to take 5 issues to get 6 heroes together. It seems like we should be getting there more quickly and then having them face this conflict together, rather than dragging out the formation of the team.

As for DC's claim that this relaunch was supposed to entice new readers, I don't buy it. If that was really a major goal of theirs, then why are two of their biggest franchise families (Batman and Green Lantern) carrying over pretty much all of their old continuity? The Lantern titles are even basically picking up right where their last pre-relaunch issues ended. A lot of the other titles (Justice League Dark and Stormwatch, for example) make absolutely no attempt to get new readers up to speed on who these people are or anything. Sure there are some that are new-reader friendly and good (I, Vampire, Batman [new-reader friendly to some degree], Action Comics, etc.), but many of the ones that seemed most accessible to new readers were awful (Red Hood and the Outlaws, Voodoo, Grifter, Superman, etc.). Based on what they published after the relaunch, I have a hard time believing that this was actually one of their primary focuses. I think it just made for good press. While I'm excited for more DC titles than I've been in a long time, I think they've made more of a mess of continuity than they had before, which is probably going to be off-putting to many new readers (and some old readers, too).

Comic Book Resources has been doing a series where they have new or lapsed readers take a look at that week's releases and give their thoughts and say if they would come back for more. It didn't turn out so well. Sure those are individual people's opinions, but I've seen other people have similar discussions around the web.

I hope this doesn't seem like I'm being condescending or trying to start an argument or something. If it does seem that way, I apologize, as that's not my intention. This is just something I'm interested in, so I like to discuss it with other people and I tend to get pretty into it.

I, for one, don't feel like Justice League is a slow burn, decompressed story. I feel like it's Geoff Johns seeing how poorly he can pace a story and still get people to believe it's good.

Seriously, though, I'm all for decompressed, long-form stories, but I feel like we're not really going anywhere worth going. I feel like this is just validating my apathy toward previous Justice League incarnations, despite being interested in some of the individual members.

I agree that Batman and (especially) Wonder Woman have been amazing, though. When it comes to my hopes for a mainstream comic, they go to 11.

I hope it sticks, I really do. As weird as some of the character choices are, as bizarre as it seems trying to keep some of the old storylines intact despite superheroes only being around for 5 years in the new universe... I do hope it sticks. If DC goes back to the pre-Flashpoint universe in a couple of years for *whatever* reason, they're done. Game over. Might as well quit publishing because they'll have lost the respect (and dollars) of the long time fans and won't gain any new readers.
They have a lot riding on this.

There's an elephant in the room that you're not mentioning:
Illegal downloads.

That's at the heart of everything.
Paul Cornell recently said from a quick, informal study he did, he figures there are 6 illegal downloads for every comic that's sold. So...

What if Marvel and DC weren't "shedding readers"?
What if the truth of the matter was that the same number or more are reading comics, but just screwing companies out of their sales?

If people weren't illegally downloading comics and paying for them instead, WOULD prices still be so high? I doubt it. Would companies have to rely on gimmicks and events? Probably not as much. The biggest threat to comics right now are online thieves and pirates.

If everyone went back to paying for the books they read, I think most of the problems you talked about would fade away.

I think there's one other huge facet missing here. Their cost.

I'm not trying to justify their prices set for one issue, but rather expose the cost of the physical medium vs digital format.

Printing and maintenance of those printers, shipping and external forces all add up. When its compared to renting out web and storage space, then allowing their readers to download almost instantaneously not only the current issue, but any back issue, their costs drop dramatically. They aren't paying out of pocket for delivery - the user is. They aren't paying for people to man those presses, trucks, etc. The are removed from the digital format. This in turn (hopefully)increases their profits.

If they can make a much better profit margin, hopefully WB and Disney will be wise enough to re-invest in these stories and return to quality over quantity.

But, being a cynic, I can't expect Disney and WB to do that - their investors and their precious dividends matter way more than their customers.

In fact, I'll bet that we'll more of the watering down of these plots, characters and quality plots, with more knee-jerk marketing, cheap plots and re-inventions occurring with ever more price increases.
